Patti Smith Announces Horses 50th Anniversary Reissue

P

atti Smith will celebrate half a century of Horses with a new anniversary edition, out October 10 through Legacy Recordings. The reissue offers both vinyl and CD formats and comes fully remastered, giving longtime fans and new listeners a chance to experience the record with fresh clarity.

More than just a re-release, this edition dives deeper into Smith’s early work. It includes alternate takes and outtakes that have never been shared publicly before, along with her original RCA audition tape from 1975. For listeners who know Horses inside and out, these additions offer a glimpse of the creative process behind one of the most influential albums of its time.

The announcement arrives as Smith prepares to take Horses back on the road. She will perform the album in full on a 50th anniversary tour spanning the U.S., U.K., and Europe. Longtime bandmates Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty will join her, making the shows as close as possible to the original spirit of the record.

Horses remains a landmark, a record that shattered boundaries when it was released in 1975. Fifty years later, the album’s raw power still resonates, and the reissue stands as both a celebration of its history and a reminder of Patti Smith’s lasting influence.
