14-Year-Old Iris Copperman Releases New EP Middle School Dropout

I

ris Copperman has released her new EP Middle School Dropout via Interscope Records.

The six-song project comes from the Nashville-based artist, who is just 14 but has been writing music since early childhood. Across the EP, she reflects on a difficult period in her life, drawing directly from her experience in middle school and the impact it had on her sense of self.

Copperman has spoken openly about that time, describing how she struggled with the environment and eventually transitioned to homeschooling. Rather than shutting down those memories, she uses them as the foundation for the EP, approaching them with a mix of honesty and curiosity. The result is a set of songs that stays rooted in personal experience while still reaching outward.

Tracks like “Roses” take that approach head-on, moving through hurt without losing sight of growth. Other songs, including “Awkward” and “Kinder,” balance reflection with a sense of perspective, while the title track brings the themes together in a more expansive way. On “Struggle Bus,” which opens the EP, she leans into the emotional back-and-forth of that time before landing in a place of acceptance.

She credits “Struggle Bus” as a turning point in how she writes, describing it as the moment things began to feel more honest and fully her own.

“Bully,” another standout track, looks at how harm can repeat itself, pairing that theme with a more layered, dynamic sound. The song was co-written with Shane McAnally and Ross Copperman, who also served as executive producer on the EP.

Copperman has also been closely involved in the visual side of the project, contributing to the development of the music videos for both singles. The video for “Struggle Bus” follows her through a school day, while “Bully” continues that story, showing how she processes those experiences through writing and music.

At its core, Middle School Dropout is centered on empathy. Copperman has said her goal with these songs is to encourage kindness, both toward others and toward yourself, even when those experiences are still fresh.

With this release, she introduces herself as a young artist working through real experiences in real time, using songwriting as a way to make sense of it.
