avis Staples has announced her first solo album in six years. Sad and Beautiful World will be released November 7 on Anti- Records.
The record brings together both new songs and carefully chosen covers, stretching across decades of American music. Guests include Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Each appearance highlights the respect Staples commands across generations of musicians.
Ahead of the release, Staples shared her version of Kevin Morby’s “Beautiful Strangers.” Earlier this summer she also unveiled a moving take on Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” further showing her ability to transform any song into something uniquely her own.
The album was produced by Brad Cook, who has described the sessions as simple and centered around Staples’ unmistakable voice. At 86, she remains one of music’s most enduring and vital artists, able to channel both pain and hope in a way that feels timeless.
Sad and Beautiful World is not just a return, it is a reminder that Mavis Staples still has more to say, and she continues to say it with unmatched soul.
