The track leans further into his R&B influences, building on the sound he’s been shaping over the past year. It’s polished, but still centered on emotion, with Sekou focusing more on honesty than perfection.
He described the song as something personal, calling it both an escape and a conversation he had been avoiding. Rather than overworking the process, he let the track come together in a more direct way, using it as a space to say things he hadn’t been able to put into words before.
“Dangerous Lover” follows his mixtape In A World We Don’t Belong Pt. 1, released in November. That project introduced a more defined version of his sound, mixing familiar melodies with a modern edge. Tracks like “Catching Bodies” and “Never Gunna Give You Up” helped build momentum, with “Catching Bodies” continuing to grow in streams.
Since then, Sekou has stayed active. He performed a pop-up show at Rough Trade alongside Kevin Abstract, opened for Sam Smith during a residency in San Francisco, and joined them onstage for a duet of “Too Good At Goodbyes.” He also made his BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge debut, performing his own work alongside a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Yukon,” following a recent collaboration on Bieber’s album.
The 21-year-old has also picked up his first MOBO nomination for Best Newcomer, adding to a growing list of milestones that includes a shortlist placement for BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024 and a Rising Star nomination at the BRIT Awards.
Next month, he’ll take his music on the road with the In A World We Don’t Belong UK and EU tour, beginning in Brussels before heading through cities including London, Manchester, Paris, and Amsterdam.
With “Dangerous Lover,” he continues to build on that momentum, staying focused on developing his sound while keeping the writing grounded in real experience.
